Any bright gamma-ray source, located less than 35 deg away from the pointing axis of the SIGMA telescope, projects an arc-shaped image on the detector through one of two interruptions in the cylindrical passive shield of the telescope. These interruptions act as collimators whose field of view (FOV) consists of sidelobes in the SIGMA sensitivity diagram. The upper collimator enables high angular resolution images in the 35-200 keV band to obtained. The lower one offers a much higher sensitive area up to 300 keV to the detriment of angular resolution. Thanks to the significant FOV, this imaging system is well suited to the localization of new gamma-ray sources, as well as long time scale survey of already known bright sources, located outside the coded FOV of SIGMA. After a comprehensive description of this imaging system, a report is given on the specific data analysis of arc-shaped images, including preliminary results of in-flight calibrations derived from bright source observation data. Forthcoming papers will present results concerning a new cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), as well as several bright binary systems observed within the sidelobes of the SIGMA telescope.
