Despite the low declination of Jupiter in 1983, good coverage was maintained thanks to extensive series of photographs from southerly observers. The southern hemisphere of Jupiter was affected by large scale, interconnected disturbances in the South Temperate Zone, in the South Temperate Belt (the Fade), and in the South Tropical Zone. The South Tropical Dislocation evolved more slowly than expected, while the Great Red Spot accelerated considerably. The equatorial features were unusually large; several of them coherently spanned the entire Equatorial Zone. In another part of the southern Equatorial Zone, the long-lived white spot still existed, with renewed deceleration.
