In this paper we explore the range of chemical abundances of stars in clusters of the small magellanic cloud (SMC) and the large magellanic cloud (LMC). The analysis is done by comparing synthetic spectra with spectra of stars taken at a medium resolution. We do not confirm that NGC 330 and NGC 1818 are underabundant with respect to field stars of the SMC and the LMC. Photometric colors do not fit correctly the deduced temperatures; this is probably due to interstellar extinction, unresolved double stars and/or to an important foreground of unresolved hot blue stars. The smooth age-metallicity abundance relation of the SMC established by photometry is restored. In the LMC, a similar result is proposed with a dispersion amongst the metal abundance of the studied LMC clusters.
