Linear models of channels representing in idealized form the North Sea, English Channel and Irish Sea are used to estimate how the tidal motions in the shallow seas surrounding the British Isles affect the lunar semidiurnal geomagnetic variations L2 at Greenwich, Abinger, Hartland, Valentia and Eskdalemuir. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is also considered, taking into account the underlying highly conducting layer. These results are compared with midnight values of L2 derived by S. R. C. Malin (1969, and 1970). Tidally induced electric currents flowing in the Atlantic Ocean seem adequate to explain the overall magnitude and phase of L2(D) and L2(Z) at midnight, according to his estimates (regarding the part of L2 due to ionospheric currents as being insignificant). The tidal effects in coastal waters may explain the large midnight L2(Z) at Hartland and the small difference existing in all three components between other stations. The effects of the North Sea are likely to be significant at Greenwich, Abinger and Eskdalemuir.
