The authors report the first measurement of He I λ10830 for a broadline radio galaxy. The galaxy, 3C 120, produces a line flux of 2.7×10-13erg cm-2s-1. The relative strengths of λ10830 and other prominent broad emission lines are: λ10830/He I λ5876/Hβ/Hα = 0.64/0.27/1.00/6.3. Although these lines are reddened significantly, the large λ5876/λ10830 value (0.42) indicates that reddening alone cannot account for the exceptional strength of λ5876 relative to Hβ. Rather, the line ratios support the conclusion of Feldman and MacAlpine that the lines form in a region of high density (ne ⪆ 1010cm-3) and large optical depth (τ10830 ⪆ 1200), where collisional excitation of 23P and 33D augments the λ5876 emission. The large Hβ/λ10830 value (1.6) indicates that collisional enhancement of Hβ occurs as well.
