A numerical model of planetary rings in which particles interact through gravitation and inelastic collisions is considered. Arbitrary mass distributions are allowed. The present paper is a preparatory study of binary encounters. A detailed algorithm for the computation of the particle orbits is presented, taking into account the existence of collisions and the initial eccentricity of the orbits. In particular, equations are derived for the 'sliding phase', where the two particles slide for a while on each other. The average energies transferred into radial motion and lost in inelastic collisions are calculated for various values of the physical parameters, and with gravitation and collisions taken alone or in combination. Limits on the possible values of the particle density and the coefficient of restitution, an eccentricity distribution which is preserved by encounters, and a set of empirical functions which allow a simple and fast computation of the outcome of an encounter are obtained.
