Spiral Galaxies, X Rays

Scientific paper

In this review I shall begin with a summary of some new results on the extended X-ray components. I will then concentrate on a subset of the discrete-source population within galaxies, now refered to as ultraluminous sources (ULXs). A relative term used because their luminosities are considerably more, and sometimes far in excess of that predicted for accretion of material onto a solar mass compact object. This topic is now receiving particularly close attention because it is exceptionally well suited to studies that exploit the excellent spatial resolution (better than an arc second) delivered by the Chandra observatory.
