The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) studies neutrinos from the Sun, supernovae and other astrophysical sources. The detector is situated 2000 m underground in an active nickel mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and observes Cerenkov light from neutrinos interacting with 1000 tonnes of ultra-pure heavy water (D2O) surrounded by 7000 tonnes of light water shielding.
