It is often hard to determine whether, in any given case, star-formation or galactic nuclear processes dominate the bolometric luminosity of individual galaxies. We discuss just why this should be so difficult, critically examining several proposed tests. We also discuss the evidence suggesting that star-formation and nuclear activity may affect each other.
