Architect and astronomer, born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, became professor of astronomy at Gresham College, and Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford. He rebuilt London after the fire of 1666, planning the entire city and rebuilding 51 churches, including St Paul's Cathedral. Newton acknowledges Wren as a mathematician in the Principia.
