Chemist and physicist, isolated two new metals from platinum ore, one of which he named palladium (after the newly discovered asteroid, Pallas). He was one of the first scientists to observe ultraviolet radiation, and in 1801 discovered the dark spectral lines in the solar spectrum which were later investigated by FRAUNHOFER.
