Dutch astronomer, became a member of the Mount Wilson staff, and studied
the rotation of spiral nebulae as a means to establish their distances.
His detection of rotational motions was illusory and misleadingly
suggested that they were relatively nearby. Through its proper motion
and parallax, he discovered the white dwarf van Maanen's star....
