Nuclear astrophysicist, born in Austria, emigrated to Australia and was educated in Sydney, and at Birmingham University. Became professor at Cornell University. Worked with HANS BETHE on atomic physics, and in 1951 explained the `triple alpha' reaction, also called the Salpeter process, which in red giant stars makes carbon-12 from three helium nuclei.
