A continuing irony of gamma-ray burst research is the fact that while the discovery of counterparts has led to much improved understanding of gamma-ray bursts, almost all this improvement is to do with the late emission from the counterparts. The origin of the gamma-ray burst itself, both in terms of its emission process and its dynamics, remain unclear, as does the eventual energy source. Here I discuss some of the progress that has been made in this area, as well as issues that remain open. .
