Astronomer, born in Rumigny, France. From 1750 to 1754 he led an expedition to the Cape of Good Hope, where he was the first to measure the curvature of the Earth in South Africa, and, with a small telescope, compiled a still-used catalogue of nearly 10 000 southern stars.
