Born in Dundee, after a career as a lawyer's clerk, appointed as HM Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope, but soon left because of poor health. Henderson returned to Scotland as the first Scottish Astronomer Royal and, from observations made in South Africa, he was the first person to measure the distance of a star, namely Alpha Centauri, a member of the nearest star system to the Sun, at 4.5 ligh...
