In the second half of the nineteenth century mostly as the result of access to better and higher education women for the first time were not longer excluded from professional work in astronomy. They got the possibility to participate in scientifc research and tried to fight against barriers in very specific ways. This paper reports about the careers of some of the pioneer ladies of astronomy, viz. Dorothea Klumpke, Agnes Mary Clerke, Alice Everett, Annie Russell, Sofia Kovalevski, Maria Mitchell, Sarah Whiting, Mary Byrd, Williamina Paton Fleming, Antonia Maury, Annie Jump Cannon and Henrietta Swan Leavitt.
