The Oort cloud is a huge, spherical swarm of some 1012-1013 comets
surrounding the solar system and extending roughly halfway to the
nearest stars. The cloud is named for the Dutch astronomer JAN OORT who
first suggested its existence in 1950 in order to explain the orbits of
the observed LONG-PERIOD (LP) COMETS....
