Mars Organics Observer (MOO) will conduct a continuous spectroscopic and imaging survey (>1; Mars year) of Mars from the Mars-Sun L1 Lagrange point, the sole position from which the whole dayside disk of Mars is available at all times at high spatial resolution while Mars' rotation presents the entire planet daily. MOO addresses all four goals of the Mars Exploration Program.
MOO will search for "sweet spots" where gases are actively released, testing where life may now exist or may once have existed. MOO will measure many gases of biological or geological interest (CO2, H2O, HDO, CH4, C2H6, N2O, SO2, H2S, etc.), using a dual infrared echelle spectrometer (2.9-4.0 micrometers) with spatial pixels of 12km (nadir) and an entrance slit spanning one-half of Mars apparent diameter. MOO can spectrally survey 100% of Mars' in two rotations, initially binning to 96km x 96km footprints (nadir), progressing to 12km x 12km, and ultimately pinpointing active source regions to 4km accuracy.
MOO images the whole disk through seven optical filters using a high-resolution camera (14km pixels, nadir), accessing 100% of Mars each rotation. Their cadence captures an unprecedented view of weather and climatology throughout Mars' year and provides context for the spectral surveys.
