I will review recent advances from deep surveys of the cosmic X-ray background with an emphasis on the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) survey. About 584 X-ray sources have now been detected in the CDF-N, and intensive multiwavelength follow-up investigations have been performed. Specific recent advances include (1) detailed studies of the relationships between X-ray, radio, submillimeter, and infrared sources, (2) improved understanding of the starburst and normal galaxies being detected at the faintest X-ray fluxes, (3) determination of the X-ray spectral properties of moderate-luminosity active galaxies out to high redshift, and (4) constraints upon the evolution of the X-ray luminosity function and the space density of very high-redshift active galaxies. I will also discuss results obtained by combining the CDF-N with HST data from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), and I will discuss future prospects for deep X-ray surveys. We gratefully acknowledge funding from NSF CAREER award AST-9983783, CXC grant GO2-3187A, and NASA grants NAS 8-38252 and NAS 8-01128.
