A mechanism for momentum transfer between comets and the solar wind is discussed. It is shown that several instabilities result from the interaction of the solar wind and the plasma of the comet, the largest of them being an ion-acoustic instability. The latter occasions a turbulent state in the plasma, which in turn increases the rate of momentum transfer from protons in the solar wind to plasma ions.
