Peculiar motions of the sun relative to the nearby interstellar gas are taken into account in a calculation of the ionization of this gas. When these motions are on the order of 20 km/sec, the sun forms an HII zone which is greatly extended in the direction of the antiapex. An influx of energy from individual acts of ionization and a loss of energy in the collisional excitation of metastable states and in charge exchanges determine the energy balance in this region. Electron and ion temperature distributions in the direction of the apex are obtained.
