It is shown that the motion of galaxies in the intergalactic medium may lead to partial disruption of the interstellar gas layer and to gas losses in the peripheral regions of the galaxies. As a result, there may arise: an HI deficiency of the type apparently occurring in the galaxies of the Virgo cluster; a color excess which, according to Holmberg (1964), is characteristic of some spiral galaxies in Virgo; and a characteristic dust layer asymmetry, as observed in some individual galaxies.
