We present visible spectroscopic observations of 36 asteroid members of the Themis family. These observations were carried on at the European Southern Observatory, during 1996-97-98, in the wavelength range of 4900 -- 9200 Angstroms. Most of the objects show similar featureless spectra, characteristic of C-, B-, F- and G-type asteroids. A very limited spread of the distribution of superficial composition is apparent, smaller than in bakground objects, indicating a probable common origin. Two objects, 461 Saskia and 1171 Rusthawelia, display P-type spectra. Indication of aqueous alteration is clear in 15 object and is possibly present in 11 more. This result tends to indicate that the parent-body of Themis family was probably thermally metamorphosed. A small correlation between albedos and diameters is also found: as the asteroid diameter decreases a larger dispersion of albedos is present and higher albedos are displayed by smaller asteroids
