Recorded airwave signals from six large fireballs recorded since 1965 are presented, and a theoretical foundation for an understanding of meteor sounds is outlined. The meteoroid-atmosphere interaction is studied as a source of sound extending along the line of flight of the meteoroid whereby cylindrically symmetrical pressure waves are produced. A model of shock-wave propagation from an entering meteoroid in an atmosphere assumed to have 12 distinct layers is sketched.
