The present work discusses some of the advantages to be gained by developing satellite-based IR astronomy, and then examines some of the scientific questions for which it is expected that the IRAS satellite will provide data. The satellite will carry out a survey of the sky in IR and study the intensity distribution in extended IR sources. It is hoped that line emission from the interstellar medium will be detected, as well as the IR emission from remote systems.
