A contemporary model of the structure of comets is explained. Observations from satellites and laboratory research were most essential in the development of this model. The role of the solar wind in shaping the comet's tail and its influence on the composition of the tail as seen in spectra (viz., molecular-atomic transformation) are revealed. Several cometary probes, notably those of NASA, are described. Comet research will help astronomy's understanding of the giant planets; it will shed light on the origin of the solar system; and it may influence fundamental physics.
