Sublimation of water ice and other ices and ejection of dust particles entrained by the gas flow gradually erode the surface of the active region. Particles entrained by the gas into the coma will be heated up by sunlight and, as the result, water and other volatiles can be sublimated depending on heliocentric distance and particle size.
A study of an extended source and its effect on coma dynamics has been done for the case of comet Hyakutake. The comet Hyakutake was discovered in January 1996. This was a CO-rich comet, having a total CO abundance of about 10% of that of water. The importance of the extended source has been suggested by a number of observations. A surrounding halo of icy dust grains that emits water in addition to the nucleus accounts for the small nuclear size but large production rate of water.
A kinetic approach is the most convenient one to describe significantly different flow regimes and processes occurring in a coma. In this work we present the results of the development of a new model of cometary comae. The new element that makes the model different from other available models of cometary comae is the kinetic representation of the icy grain phase in a flow that also allows simulation of an extended source of volatiles in the coma. We present results of the effect of icy grain sublimation on the coma.
