Many of the large solar energetic particle (SEP) events observed by ACE during Solar Cycle 23 have a "hybrid" character - they combine characteristics of gradual events (e.g., large intensity and long duration) with those of impulsive solar flare events (e.g., enrichments of He-3 and Fe). Among the suggested explanations for this dual nature is the possibility that the seed population of ions accelerated in gradual events by CME-driven shocks includes a substantial fraction of remnnant interplanetary material from earlier impulsive flares. This model suggests that such events will also exhibit other composition signatures. Using data from the Advanced Composition Explorer we have examined more than 40 relatively large SEP events observed during 1997-2002 for enrichments of He-3, Fe, and trans-iron nuclei, as well as other composition patterns. Most of these events include measurable amounts of He-3 that is expected to have a solar-cycle dependence. We also compare the integrated fluence of impulsive-like material in gradual events with possible sources of this material, and use these results to discriminate between possible seed populations that have contributed to the large solar particle events during this solar cycle.
