Contributions on variations in the content of some isotopes (C-14, deuterium, O-18, C-13) in annual tree rings (oak and pine specimens from Germany, Britain) and various climatic phenomena (moisture content, temperature) are reviewed critically. Correlated data are plotted for periods dating back two centuries or almost a millenium. Oxygen-18 in cores of Greenland ice are examined for correlation with variations in deuterium. Various paleoclimatological and isotope dating techniques are assessed. Inferences on past climates and on past cosmic radiation intensities are considered.
