The SXDS is a high latitude survey field with an unprecedented combination of multi-wavelength depth and area coverage which aims to provide an accurate census of the contents of the Universe without suffering from the biasing effects of large-scale structure.
The core SXDS observations consist of (i) X-ray imaging with a mosaic of 7 overlapping XMM-Newton observations covering ≈ 1.3 sq.deg. and containing >1000 X-ray sources; (ii) ultra-deep multi-colour optical imaging with Subaru/SuprimeCam reaching B=27.5, R=27, i'=26.5 & z'=25.8; (iii) radio mapping at 1.4 GHz with the VLA to an rms flux density ≈ 13 μ Jy.
Complementary observations (approved and/or underway) include very deep near-IR imaging with UKIRT/WFCAM, sub-mm imaging of the central region with JCMT/SCUBA and Spitzer imaging as part of the SWIRE program.
Here we present an interim report on the SXDS project, focusing specifically on the identifications & properties of the X-ray source population. New results focus on the discovery of 10+ new X-ray selected clusters and the nature of the optically faint X-ray source population.
