The dynamic response of the rotation of the earth's solid core to a gravity restoring torque estimated as 2.50 x 10 to the 24th cos theta(i) sin theta(i) N m, where theta(i) is the angle of inclination of the core axis relative to the symmetry axis of the mantle, is investigated analytically. Two steady precessional modes are identified, and the second, a rapid nearly diurnal prograde motion in space, is examined as a possible influence on the outer-core dynamo, producing fluctuations of the geomagnetic field. Consideration is also given to the frictional, electromagnetic, and inertial torques affecting the solid core, which are estimated as (1.3-13) x 10 to the 21st N m, (2-20) x 10 to the 19th N m, and 0.000012 times the gravity torque, respectively.
