Globular Clusters, Stellar Rotation, Angular Velocity, Distance, Radial Velocity
Scientific paper
Gunn and Griffin's (1979) data on the radial velocities of stars in the globular cluster M3 are here used to study the rotation of M3 at various distances from the center. Both the projected angular rotational velocity and its position angle are found to depend on that distance. In the central zone, the angular rotational velocity is roughly 2 x 10 to the -6th/yr; beyond a radius of about 2.5 arcmin, the rotation is an order of magnitude slower. The equidensity curve parameters correlate with the position angle, and both the position angle of the major axis and the position angle of the cluster rotation axis achieve extrema at the same distance, 1.4 arcmin from the center, where the ratio of ellipses fitted to the contours of equal surface brightnesses attains its maximum value. This indicates that some coupling exists between the mass distribution in M3 and the character of its rotation.
