Solar Wind-Three-Dimensional Structure
Scientific paper
The purpose of this paper is to review the three-dimensional steady state distribution of solar wind velocity (Vsw) and density fluctuation (δNe) with respect to the heliospheric neutral sheet for the current solar cycle # 22. Solar wind observations obtained from the Ooty Radio Telescope are used to construct the synoptic maps of the plasma density and velocity. The velocity results are consistent with the Skylab-era concept that the fast wind originates from the coronal holes of open magnetic field regions. Ooty synoptic maps are compared with maps of coronal density and source surface magnetic field. This comparison reveals an association between the solar wind speed and the strength of the coronal magnetic field and shows concentrated density fluctuations above the closed magnetic field regions. It also indicates that the compressive turbulence in the high-speed wind is higher by a factor of 2 or more than in the low-speed flow. Further, the spectral data, in the spatial scale range l07 - 10 km, suggest a three-component model for the density spectrum and the shape of the spectrum changes with the flow speed of the solar wind.
