Aurora Borealis, Magnetometry

Scientific paper

A clear sky during the hours of darkness seldom occurs at the writer's location. The prospect of seeing a visual aurora is almost zero, due to cloud and sodium street lighting. However, other alternative methods of aurora detection are available for those unlucky enough not to have a clear night sky. These alternatives include magnetometry, which monitors changes in the Earth's magnetic field, and the recording of radio signals whose reception is modified by the presence of ionospheric disturbances and aurorae.
