This is a proposal to obtain low resolution IUE observations of some objects which have been classified both as infrared D-type symbiotic stars and as planetary nebulae. Optical fluxes over the wavelength range 3200 to 8000 A will also be obtained. Electron temperatures and densities will be derived from diagnostic emission line ratios, all of which require both optical and ultraviolet line fluxes. Abundances of He, C, N, 0 and Ne will be derived. The ultraviolet lines are essential for this analysis, particularly for C, N and Ne. Other parameters such as hot star temperatures and distances (from optical data) will be derived. The data will be used to ascertain the evolutionary state of these objects and to learn more about compact and/or binary planetary nebulae and unusual symbiotic stars.
