We present deep radio continuum observations of nearby galaxies, which enable an investigation into the efficiency of cosmic ray production in these systems. Using luminosity functions of radio supernova remnants, we will constrain the fraction of supernova energy which goes into accelerating the relativistic ISM. Finally, we evaluate if the efficiency of cosmic ray production varies between galaxies.
