The general problem of determining the equilibrium structure of a class of differentially rotating polytropic models of stars is investigated. Laws of differential rotation which have been used in the literature to analyze differentially rotating stars are presented, and the differential equation governing the equilibrium structure of differentially rotating polytropic models or stars obeying a certain law is obtained. Explicit expressions for obtaining the distorted shapes, volumes, surface areas, and the value of various other physical parameters of the distorted stars are derived. The equilibrium structures of certain differentially rotating polytropes or indices 1.5, 3, and 4 are computed. The application of the analysis to solar-type differentially rotating models is addressed, and the results are compared with those obtained in other studies.
