Selected ground-based optical observations and satellite-borne electron measurements are analyzed to yield auroral excitation efficiencies of the O(1S) 5577 A and N2(+) first negative (0.1) 4278 A emissions. The findings for the 5577 A excitation efficiencies illustrate the variation that may be expected in this quantity for moderate levels of geomagnetic activity and auroral intensity and for typical keV electron characteristic energies. The magnetic zenith 6300/4278 column intensity ratio is observed to vary with the characteristic energy of the exciting electron influx in a given relation. The 5577/4278 ratio decreases from 5.4 to 3.3 as the characteristic energy increases from 1 to 5 keV.
