Scientific paper

Arago was a French physicist and astronomer who played a prominent role in French scientific life during the first half of the nineteenth century. He popularised astronomy through a long series of public lectures at the Paris Observatory from 1813, and he became director of the observatory in 1830. This paper is a brief summary of his life and work, concentrating mainly on his contribution to the sciences of astronomy and optics.
