The meaning of the units in which the apparent angular lengths of cometary tails are expressed in the ancient and mediaeval Chinese records, is discussed. Conversion factors to the present angular measure are estimated by comparing the distribution of tail lengths in the 1st to 16th century Chinese records with that of the 19th century European naked-eye data.
